What if James Joyce had been hanging out at the Rúla Búla Irish Pub, sketching ideas for his book (Finnegan’s Wake) on beer coasters?

Artist Mary Lucking has created a series of paperboard beer coasters featuring notes, quotes, doodles and/or drawings about Finnegan’s Wake. Each coaster can be understood as a stand-alone piece; combined the series builds to give a general sense of the book (storyline, characters, great/funny quotes, etc). The coasters are being distributed at the Rúla Búla bar and revealed weekly in this installation until the complete set is presented.

Three Quick Notes of Relationship:
1. The book’s main character is a pub owner and a fair amount of the story takes place in a pub.
2. Finnegan’s Wake was originally released as a serialization (named A Work in Progress), as are the coasters.
3. Joyce apparently spent a couple of years obsessively taking notes for the book (who says it couldn’t have been on coasters in a pub?).
