In an effort to be more visible from the street, we put up a new banner sign for the Breathing is Free: 12,756.3 exhibition. The deep green color looks great and perks things up a bit outside.  Just come in down the main stairs and you’ll find us! Jun’s project runs through April 25th.

Let’s Get it Started!

Breathing is Free: 12,756.3

We at ASU Art Museum are excited to get our new season underway! Our first exhibition opening this Saturday, January 24, is an important refugee memorial project titled Breathing is Free: 12,756.3; New Work by Jun Nguyen-Hatshushiba. This project has a number of components including video, photography, maps and more, but takes its title from the distance of the diameter of the earth (12,756.3 km), which the artist is physically running in installments in different cities around the globe. He plans to run in Arizona in April 2009, but the museum exhibition begins on Saturday and runs through April 25, 2009.

Nguyen-Hatsushiba is known internationally for his video art, some of which is included in this current exhibition. Below is a(n iPhone) photo of the gallery in progress- those are video screens stretched across the wall.

The museum is now open Tuesday: 11am – 8pm, and Wednesday – Saturday: 11am – 5pm. We’re closed Sunday and Monday. Free parking is available outside the Ceramics Research Center in marked spaces – just be sure you sign in at the museum if you park there. :)

Great start to a new year!

I hope everyone had a great holiday season (and isn’t having too much trouble getting back into the swing of things)! We just had a really nice email from a recent ASUAM visitor who is a regular visitor of museums around the country, and since I’m sort of partial to our Americas Gallery too, I thought I’d share:

“…I was most impressed with the permanent exhibit in the Americas Gallery on the Second Floor. It is a very contemporary and bold gesture to juxtapose classic examples of varying eras. I absolutely LOVE that you did this and cannot express enough how rich an experience it was to see these works side by side. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This created a memorable and rich experience. I look forward to returning.
