Indie Chic press
ReadyMade.com picked up our notice about Indie Chic, our cool craft fair that’s happening on the same day as Tempe Festival of the Arts, December 5! This is exciting for us since the event creator and organizer, Lehka (who happens to share an office with yours truly), has gotten Ready Made magazine for years.
I can also attest to the excitement that’s been happening around here as submissions keep rolling in. There are going to be some *very* awesome artists at this event. Bring those holiday piggy banks, folks. You’re gonna need ‘em.

Zombies vs Vampires: BRAVO to Everyone!

Fun shots of vampires and zombies getting me – staged before heading out for taping in the desert this weekend, photos by Steve Gittins.
Make-up artists, videographers, photographer, and actors were in top form this weekend when we filmed Zombies vs Vampires in Tempe’s Papago Park.
Both shoots went super well – with warm weather, clear skies, an almost full moon, and no police, though a few hiker families watched the zombies in action this evening from the sidelines. One park ranger came by and thought we were a church group (!?) or a band, but he liked it so John Spiak invited him to the Nov 10th opening!
Now the editing begins!

Don’t Mess with the Monsters
We begin taping Zombies vs Vampires in two days and everyone is honing their skills.

Short Film Festival 2010

Prior year's event. Photo courtesy Ken Storch.
Please join us at the museum for the 2010 Short Film Festival. The festival will be held on April 17, at 8 PM, at our museum on the plaza.
The festival is an annual outdoor film and video event to celebrate the artistic and creative endeavors of people with different visions and levels of experience. More information is, as always, available on the museum’s event page.

random but funny
I just got this link from a Google alert and thought I’d share. It looks like something I wrote was translated into another language and then translated back to English by a non-human bot. My favorite line, I think, is the “free, hands-on art labor for the minors”.
I love me a good funny. Below, a copy of the page. It does, though, reference our sustainability season as it was picked up in the Discovery Channel’s Treehugger site, which is pretty cool.

Calling all zombies to board Z-Train!
On Saturday, Nov. 7, at sunset, a group of male and female performers will board the light rail train, take their seats, and begin to put on makeup. They will not make themselves more beautiful, but rather, they will transform into the living dead and head out into the night!
Interested? Please come to a mandatory information session:
at ASU Art Museum: on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 6pm
— or —
at Cartel Coffee Lab: on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 6pm
where we will answer all questions and provide a makeup lesson.
Cost: Free. Participation is free and basic makeup kits will be provided (but you are welcome to bring your own)
No performing or makeup application experience is necessary!

Tell your friends!

Zombies vs Vampires is Shaping Up!
I’ve lost track but I think there are only a few more days until the taping for Zombies vs Vampires, and we are inching towards being ready!

Paul and Tara help bloody up some zombie wear.

OMG apparently that is me on the left, terrifying poor Andrea our makeup artist extraordinaire. Sometimes I can’t help myself.

We dragged a museum preparator in to be a practice model – someone forgot to tell him to play dead ;) Another great make-up creation by Wendy!

Zombies (above) and Vampires (below) rehearse on an ASU plaza.

Great vampire makeup by Trevor.

Fabulous zombie looks by Angie (above) and Angelica (below).

ok it’s 3:30am which is 6:30am in New York and in any case it is way past my bedtime, so I’m signing off.

Adam Listening to the Desert
Yesterday, somewhere south of Phoenix, sound engineer Adam Murray recorded the subtle sounds of desert for Vampires vs Zombies. It was a hot, dry, crackly day and the incessant overhead plane volleys called for measured patience. I suffered many scratches as I ran, rubbed branched together, brushed against the bristled shrubbery, slithered, and otherwise performed noises for Adam’s listening machines. Luckily we encountered neither scorpions nor jumping cacti – dear desert, you are a prickly beast!

Zombies in the House
This week our skilled make-up artists have been making zombies in the gallery, and unleashing them on the unsuspecting public. Strangely every time we finish a zombie, it disappears, causing concern among the museum staff. So far, all staff are breathing and accounted for.

andrea transforms matt (above) into the living dead (below)

roxy turns bryan (above), and wendy turns sonny (below) into terrifying, though happy, zombies

matt studies kyl’s technique turning paul into a walking corpse (above)

roxy gets a taste of her own medicine in the expert hands of angie’s make-up

one big happy family! note to zombies: do not eat your make-up artist!
5 days left until the Zombies vs Vampires video showdown – don’t miss it!

October 24 at ASU
This past Friday, I photographed a number of ASU students who participated in the International Day of Climate Action with the environmentally-conscious organization 350. In preparation for the main event that was held Saturday, October 24, the students painted our iconic gold A on A Mountain a really, really vibrant green. On Saturday, a fairly large group of people went back and spelled out a human 3-5-0 in front of the green A for photo ops.
You can see the main event photos on Facebook, but here are a few that I got of the painting session. And a very green A.
